Georgia's best cycling routes
Urban routes in Tbilisi
Tbilisi keeps adding cycle paths. The Mtkvari riverside - from Dedaena Park out to Lisi Lake - is a flat 12 km run and an ideal first ride. The forest trails around the Botanical Garden will delight MTB riders: technical climbs and fast descents in the same place.
The Kazbegi route
The Georgian Military Highway is a cyclist's dream. The 150 km route from Tbilisi to Kazbegi passes the Zhinvali reservoir, Ananuri fortress and the Jvari Pass (2,395 m). The climb from Kazbegi up to Gergeti Trinity Church is a genuine MTB challenge. Rate it moderate to hard and allow 2-3 days.
The trails of Svaneti
The trails around Mestia draw more international riders every year. The Koruldi Lakes route (20 km each way) opens out onto sweeping panoramas of the Caucasus peaks. The 60 km Becho to Ushguli route is a properly epic ride, but only for experienced mountain bikers.
Practical advice
