Bike maintenance and technical checks

The monthly check

Regular maintenance does not only extend the life of your bike, it keeps you safe. A handful of simple jobs takes 15-20 minutes and buys you a month of comfortable riding.

• Tyre pressure - check weekly. Low pressure raises the risk of a puncture.
• Brakes - pads should meet the rotor or rim evenly. Keep an eye on the wear indicator.
• Chain - clean and lubricate every 200 km, or after any ride in the rain.
• Derailleurs - shifting should be crisp and quiet.

Seasonal servicing

Twice a year - in spring and autumn - the bike is worth taking to a mechanic. A professional service covers headset bearings, wheel truing, a full brake system diagnosis, derailleur adjustment and greasing every bearing surface.

The basic toolkit

At home you want: a multi-tool with hex keys, tyre levers, a hand pump with a gauge, a chain cleaner and lube. That minimum kit covers most of the problems you will actually meet.
