Winter cycling - tips and preparation

Dress in layers

The main rule of winter riding: dress in layers rather than one thick garment. The first layer is a thermal base that wicks sweat. The second is insulation - fleece or merino wool. The third is a windproof, waterproof jacket. That way your body stays warm without overheating.

Preparing the bike

  • Tyres - use wider tyres (35 mm+) at lower pressure. They grip better on wet and icy surfaces.
  • Lights - it gets dark early in winter. Front and rear lights are mandatory, not optional.
  • Brakes - discs work better than rim brakes in the wet. Check the condition of your pads.
  • Chain care - damp weather accelerates corrosion. Lubricate more often, and use a wet lube.

Staying safe in winter

On ice, cut your speed and brake gently - a sudden grab is what puts you into a skid. Do not lean into corners; keep your body upright. When the weather is genuinely bad - black ice, fog, strong wind - take the bus. Your health always comes first.
