A guide to choosing a helmet
Why a helmet is essential
The statistics are unambiguous: a helmet cuts the risk of head injury by 85%. Wearing one is not yet a legal requirement in Georgia, but that does not make riding without one safe. Buckle up for every ride, whether it is five minutes or five hours.
Types of helmet
- Road - light, aerodynamic, well ventilated. For fast riding on tarmac.
- Mountain (MTB) - extra coverage at the back of the head, a visor against the sun, tougher construction.
- Full-face - complete protection including jaw and face. For enduro and downhill.
- Urban - styled for everyday riding, often with an integrated LED light.
Getting the size right
Measure the circumference of your head - 2 cm above the eyebrows, above the ears and around the most prominent point at the back. That measurement in centimetres maps directly to helmet size. The helmet should not rock, but it should not pinch either. A dial-fit retention system gets you the exact fit.
One thing to remember: a helmet is single-use. After an impact its protective structure is compromised even if it looks undamaged. Replace it.
