How to choose a mountain bike

Why a mountain bike?

A mountain bike (MTB) is the natural choice for Georgia's demanding terrain. Whether it is the trails around Tbilisi's Botanical Garden or the runs at the mountain resorts, an MTB copes everywhere. Mountain bikes are built around a reinforced frame, wide tyres and a suspension system, which is what makes the ride both comfortable and safe.

Choosing your frame size

Frame size is the first and most important parameter. The wrong size does not just make riding uncomfortable, it raises your risk of injury. To work out your size, measure your height and your inside leg length.

  • S (15-16") - height 155-165 cm
  • M (17-18") - height 165-175 cm
  • L (19-20") - height 175-185 cm
  • XL (21-22") - height 185+ cm

Hardtail or full suspension?

A hardtail has front suspension only, which keeps it light and efficient on climbs. Full suspension damps both wheels and comes into its own on technical descents. For a beginner a hardtail is an excellent choice - affordable and simple to maintain. Experienced riders tend to prefer full suspension for the extra control and comfort.
